On the Water

A couple of weeks ago the organizer of our local photography group put together a bird photographing activity with an open invitation to all who were willing to wake up with the sun, paddle a canoe for 2 1/2 hours, and get a little wet to try to snap a few shots of these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. Sweet! An opportunity to be in a canoe on a beautiful morning, watch the wildlife emerge AND put my telephoto lense to good use- I'm in!
I thoroughly enjoyed the activity, comraderie with fellow photographers, being "at one with nature," the sounds, sights, and smells of early morning on a lazy river, giving my arms an excellent workout, and of course playing "I spy" with the animals. I also quickly learned that birds are even more difficult to photograph than children. Let's just say I won't be applying for National Geographic anytime soon. Anytime ever. But I would love to improve my wildlife photography skills, if only for the excuse to be out in nature even more.

(No that is not me, I'm behind the camera)

I love a salty man, with a hat, and a beard, and his dog.

Not bad!
Todd and I went "birding" back in our BYU days with one of his professors. I couldn't believe how much he knew about birds- all these teeny tiny details that one has to view very quickly or from very far away or from the jaggy view of a binocular. I knew it wasn't something I would be good at, but I decided I should know at least a handful of birds. I think that's about all I know.
This reminds me of the opening scene of Peace Like a River where Davy is hunting duck- you've read that right? If you haven't, I think you would like it.
