Camping and Canoeing

Summer is for camping. And popcicles. And flip flops. And the smell of barbeque. And walks at twilights. And, well let's face it, one could go on and on about the joys of summer. But in this post I will focus on summer is for camping, as we had a short but sweet camping trip this past weekend. We stayed in a campground at the top of the canyon, nestled in amongst the pine next to a beautiful lake. Jeff, Carrie and her kids joined us and the cousins had a great time wrestling in the tents, making banana boats, canoeing in the lake, throwing rocks in all bodies of water, swimming, and catching butterflies. Gotta love fresh air, full moon, starry sky, campfire, free (almost) camping! Here's a few pics to tell the story of our little trip.

As an avid cotton hating, leave no trace, sleep outside on the coldest day of the year to thicken your blood backpacker, Dave used to scoff at car camping. Just look at him now! Looks like he's gotten used to it.

Oh look, everyone is helping to carry the canoe on our first evening there. The sun had just dipped below the mountain- the perfect time for a quick row on the quiet lake.

Uncle Jeff helping Seige put on his like jacket. All the boys decided to test out the brand new canoe together on its virgin ride.

Gabe was especially excited to get out on the water.

The shove off. All is well.

Peacefully rowing...

And moments later, in slow motion, the canoe began to wobble, and then dip to the right, and then it was completely over. What I remember most about the moment is watching from behind as Jeff's hand shot up straight over his head, holding on to the back of Gabe's jacket. Nice reflexes Jeff!

Unfortunately, I didn't capture the actual tip over (that would probably make me a really bad mother if I did), but I did snap a few shots just afterwards as they carried soaking, terrified kids out of the water. McKennan, however, actually liked it and kept asking to "do it again!"

We stripped off Gabe's clothes and he watched saddly as Uncle Jeff and Daddy headed back out (soaked as they were) for a row with McKennan.

A rock throwing contest with Uncle Jeff. I think Avery won.

Give a kid a paddle and some water and enjoy the hours of entertainment.

So, have you been camping yet?
